07 Nov Krahling will ensure elections remain fair

The following ran in the November 6, 2016 Las Cruces Sun News Letters to the Editor:

The cornerstone of any democracy is that elections are fair and that every vote is counted. The official tasked with that solemn duty in our community is the county clerk. I can think of no better person for that position than Scott Krahling.

I am an independent voter. Just like everyone else, I want my voice to be heard when I vote. I know that as county clerk, Scott will make sure every vote is counted and that our elections are fair and transparent. I know we will be able to trust the results.

I first met Scott over 20 years ago, when we were both studying government at New Mexico State University. I was impressed with his commitment to democracy. Since then, I have seen my friend serve as a Doña Ana County commissioner and in the County Clerk’s Office as chief deputy clerk.

Scott is the only candidate for county clerk who has actual hands-on experience in the Clerk’s Office and with administering elections. Scott has administered 22 elections. From his first day in office, Scott will know how to do the job. When it comes to elections, it is important to get things done right the first time.

As chief deputy clerk, Scott’s outreach efforts to encourage people to vote have also impressed me. He understands that with 28 days of early voting, an election is a season, not just one day. His outreach efforts resulted in a high turnout in the primary election, and now in the general election, the highest early voting turnout ever in our county. He understands that only through maximum voter participation can we achieve government that is truly representative of our community.

He is a competent leader who I trust with my vote and yours.

C.J. McElhinney,

Las Cruces
